How Long Should a Perfume Last?

EDT vs EDP: Concentration Is Everything

The single biggest factor in how long a fragrance lasts is its concentration: how much pure fragrance oil is present relative to alcohol and water.

The most common concentrations you'll encounter are:

• Eau de Cologne (EDC): 2–4% fragrance oil. Light and fresh, but typically lasts 1–2 hours.
• Eau de Toilette (EDT): 5–15% fragrance oil. The most widely available concentration. Expect 3–4 hours of wear.
• Eau de Parfum (EDP): 15–20% fragrance oil. Richer, deeper, and significantly longer-lasting. Typically 6–8+ hours.
• Parfum (Extrait): 20–40% fragrance oil. The most concentrated and longest-lasting form. A small amount goes a very long way.

Oily skin tends to hold fragrance longer. The natural oils give the scent something to cling to, slowing evaporation and extending wear.

Dry skin absorbs fragrance quickly and releases it just as fast. If you have dry skin and find your perfume fades within a few hours, it's not the fragrance's fault. It's the canvas. The solution is simple: moisturise before you spray. An unscented body lotion or oil applied to pulse points before your perfume creates a base that significantly extends longevity.

Weather and Climate

Heat and humidity amplify fragrance. In warm weather, scents project further and develop faster, which can feel wonderful, but also means they may fade sooner as the molecules evaporate more quickly.

In cold, dry conditions, fragrance tends to stay closer to the skin and project less. It may feel more subtle, but it can actually last longer because the cooler temperature slows evaporation.

The three enemies of fragrance are heat, light, and humidity. All three degrade the fragrance molecules over time, altering the scent and reducing its performance.

The bathroom, where most people keep their perfume, is actually one of the worst places to store it. The daily fluctuations in heat and humidity from showers accelerate deterioration.

Instead:

• Store your fragrance in a cool, dark place. A bedroom drawer or wardrobe shelf is ideal.
• Keep it in its original box when not in use to protect it from light
• Avoid windowsills, radiators, and anywhere that gets direct sunlight
• Keep the cap on when not in use to minimise oxidation

A well-stored Eau de Parfum can remain at its best for 3–5 years. A poorly stored one may begin to change within months.

What to Expect From a Quality EDP

A well-formulated Eau de Parfum, worn on moisturised skin, stored correctly, and applied to the right pulse points should comfortably last 6–8 hours, often more.
